DROUGHT
FORCES INDIAN FARMERS TO LOAN WIVES TO BROTHELS
The Daily Telegraph in the UK reports that
farmers in India, who have been bankrupted by a serious drought,
have resorted to selling their wives to brothels to help pay off
their creditors.
Farmers in the northern states of the country
have been hit hard by successive droughts and flash floods in
recent years, leaving them deep in debt.
One wife told of how her husband had to sell her
to a pimp for a month to raise 2,500 ruppees (£31) to pay back
his debt, the Daily Telegraph reported.
“We had nothing to eat and my husband had huge
debts. It was difficult to survive and I had to sell myself to
live,” she said.
